Esports Is Becoming Larger Than The Mainstream Sports

Updated: Nov 13, 2021

Esports has been growing in popularity in the past ten years, with annual championships offering millions to players. I believe that Esports will go further than any mainstream sports that today's population watch.

Growing up I'm sure that at one point your parents said video games was a waist of time. But that's not the case anymore, back in 2019 when a popular video game called Fortnight hosted its first World Cup event. Each player who qualified to be at this cup received fifty thousand dollars and first place received a total of three million dollars. Kyle Giersdorf, 16 year old from Pottsgrove Pennsylvania took home this first place prize money. A freshman in high school made more money than majority of people will make in their entire life.

“You can be a millionaire playing video games and colleges are seeing the value in this.”

Today we see big name school adopting Esports team into there program, creating rosters of students and building arenas for specifically these events.

Ohio State University has just created their video game arena, offering students high-tech computers and equipment to play and practice in their favorite games.

What is Esports?

Esports is playing certain video games at competitive level. Usual players fly out to a stadium and compete side by side usually sponsored by teams. With COVID most professionals have started playing and streaming to fans on Twitch due to no being able to compete in person. Twitch is a streaming service owned by Amazon that draws 15 million active viewers a day. With hundreds of games with a competitive community finding a passion and career in this field is starting to become more of a realistic future.
